Though Iqbal Masih’s life was taken away before he was 13 years old, his powerful and eloquent speeches encouraged thousands of bonded laborers and child slaves to follow his example. Why I like this book: Pegi Deitz Shea writes a very important story about the power of children working together to end child labor in Pakistan. Her fictional story honors the legacy of a boy, Iqbal Masih, who risked his own life to free children from slavery so that they could attend school. Iqbal's cause inspired the creation of organizations such as We Charity, a Canada-based charity and youth movement, and the Iqbal Masih Shaheed Children Foundation, which has started over 20 schools in Pakistan. In 1994, Iqbal visited Broad Meadows Middle School in Quincy, Massachusetts, and spoke to 7th graders about his life. Inspired the Iqbal MaSIH!
